Xelect is pleased to announce a new partnership with Habitat, an innovative aquaculture company focused on developing next-generation, land-based systems for salmon.
Under this collaboration, Xelect will work with Habitat to deliver a bespoke breeding programme, supporting Habitat’s long‑term vision for sustainable, land‑based aquaculture.

Founded in 2017, with its first production batch in 2018, Habitat has built its operations around a strong research and development focus, alongside commercial fish sales. The company is pioneering the integration of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) with nutrient capture for agricultural use, aiming to create a more circular and resource‑efficient production platform.

Habitat has made encouraging early progress, while recognising that significant work remains as the business continues to develop and scale. As part of its growth strategy, Habitat is actively seeking a new location for an expanded broodstock facility, with the goal of supplying year-round, all female, disease free eggs from its land based broodstock sites.

“This partnership strengthens our commitment to helping innovative land‑based producers like Habitat build world‑class genetics platforms.”

– Dr Marie Smedley, Global Head of Xelect
Through its partnership with Xelect, Habitat aims to strengthen and future‑proof its genetics platform by integrating all existing genetics into a single, cohesive nucleus, supporting efficient multiplier group production Xelect’s expertise in aquatic breeding programme design, nucleus–multiplier structures, and long‑term genetic strategy will support Habitat as it works towards these goals.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to innovation, sustainability, and science‑led aquaculture. Xelect looks forward to working closely with the Habitat team as they continue to build a robust land‑based production platform for coho salmon.
