Xelect is a private company registered in Scotland. It started as a spin-out from a leading aquaculture research group at the University of St Andrews in 2012 . The founders were Professor Ian Johnston FRSE, then Director of the Scottish Oceans Institute at the university, and Dr Tom Ashton.

We manage and support breeding programmes on behalf of leading producers of farmed finfish, shrimp and shellfish worldwide.

Our expert team of aquaculture specialists and geneticists provide practical solutions that are tailored to the needs of your breeding programme and production goals.

We operate a private fully equipped genetics laboratory with state-of-the-art molecular biology instruments.

We have an active research and development pipeline to develop sophisticated new genetic analysis tools and computational methods.

We are developing cutting edge hardware to measure critical physical traits using artificial intelligence and machine vision.

We have active R&D programmes supported by Horizon 2020 and Scottish Enterprise, enabling us to maintain our position at the forefront of our field.
