Aquaculture Breeding Programme Manager

Permanent position. Full time. £32,000 to £43,000 p/a depending on experience

Xelect manages breeding programmes for fish and shrimp species across the Americas, Europe, SE Asia, Africa and Oceania, including for some of the most well-known and progressive companies in the industry.  The company also operate an internal R & D programme at the forefront of aquaculture genetics and we are an industrial partner in several major academic research project.  We wish to recruit two highly motivated people to join our team and are looking for a suitably qualified candidates with a strong grounding in quantitative genetics.

Xelect Ltd is seeking to appoint two dynamic aquaculture professionals to our growing team. The successful candidates will be educated to at least MSc level in aquaculture and/or animal genetics and breeding, with extensive relevant experience. The positions are based at our headquarters in St. Andrews, Scotland, but will require some overseas travel.  Xelect is at the forefront of genetic services to the aquaculture industry worldwide, serving 54 customers in 19 countries. We offer complete genetics support to breeding programmes for multiple species of fish and shellfish, alongside expert consultancy on broodstock and aquaculture operations for corporate clients. One of the roles will also be focused on due diligence for mergers and acquisitions or investment. Xelect has offices, modern genetics laboratory and DNA sequencing facility are in the heart of the historic centre of St Andrews. Our breeding programme management services include genotyping, genetic calculations and practical support in client’s hatcheries. The due diligence work involves carrying out audits on broodstock, hatchery operations, production, biosecurity, environmental monitoring, animal welfare, harvesting, processing, data management staff skills and training.

The positions require proficiency in statistical analysis and subsequent compiling of reports and presentations. The successful candidates would be expected to have excellent organisational and time management abilities, be able to work effectively on their own or as a member of a team and have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.

Essential skills:

  • A minimum of a M.Sc. relating to aquaculture, quantitative genetics, fish reproduction or animal breeding.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge and experience of hatchery and broodstock management, including aquaculture operations more widely for finfish and/ or shellfish species.
  • Experience working with aquaculture industry.
  • Excellent data management and computer literacy skills.
  • Willing to travel and experience working in other countries.
  • Basic knowledge of statistics and programming platforms.

Desirable skills:

  • PhD. relating to aquaculture, fish reproduction or animal breeding.
  • Proficiency of programming platforms R and / or Linux.
  • Advanced statistical skills including multivariate analysis.
  • Proficiency in other languages.
  • Peer reviewed publications in the field of aquaculture, reproduction or genetics.
