At Xelect, we believe genetics is the key to unlocking a more sustainable, profitable, and resilient future for aquaculture.

Founded in 2012 as a spin-out from the University of St Andrews, we’ve grown into a global leader in genetic services for aquaculture. Today, we support breeding programmes in 11 countries across 16 species.

Our founders, Professor Ian Johnston, former director of the Scottish Oceans Institute, and Dr Tom Ashton, set out to transform aquaculture through science. Ian Johnston continues to serve as a consultant and thought leader, guiding our strategic direction and driving innovation.
