The Board

Xelect is a private company registered in Scotland. It started as a spin-out from a leading aquaculture research group at the University of St Andrews in 2012 . The founders were Professor Ian Johnston FRSE, then Director of the Scottish Oceans Institute at the university, and Dr Tom Ashton.

Ian A. Johnston


Ian is internationally recognised as one of the world’s leading fish physiologists. He has published more than 350 research papers during his academic career and has a long history of working with the aquaculture industry. Before becoming full-time CEO of Xelect he was Chandos Professor and Director of the Scottish Oceans Institute at the University of St Andrews (1997-2016), member of the Natural Research Council of the UK (1995-2000) and President of the Society for Experimental Biology, one of Europe’s leading learned societies and publishing companies (2007-9).

Dr Tom Ashton


To co-founded Xelect in 2012 after completing a PhD at University of St Andrews. He has a background in aquaculture, project management and molecular biology.

During the establishment of Xelect, Tom has played a central role in patenting intellectual property, developing commercial strategy, legal documentation, contracts, human resources, facilities management, financial reporting, marketing and customer relations.

Ken Fraser


Ken is a qualified accountant, self employed for most of his working life. Over the last 26 years working as an independent Director with a number of companies throughout the UK, sometimes representing private equity investors assisting the businesses to grow and often to implement strategic change.

Andy Goor


Andy is the Chief Financial Officer at the University of St Andrews where he is responsible for leading and developing both short and long term financial plans, supporting the over-arching University strategy, along with ensuring financial control and sustainability is maintained across the University.

After graduating with a Ba(Hons) in Accounting, he gained an ACMA professional qualification with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. Andy gained 17 years’ experience within senior finance roles within the healthcare sector across England and Scotland before moving into the HE sector in March 2011 at the University of St Andrews.
